Inclusion Starts with Intention
As conversations around autism continue to grow during Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month, one thing becomes increasingly clear. It is that inclusion doesn’t happen by accident. It is thoughtfully created, nurtured, and continuously improved across the environments that children move through every day.
From classrooms and daycares to community play spaces and family outings, inclusive environments help children feel safe, understood, and able to participate in ways that are meaningful to them.
What Inclusive Environments Really Mean
Inclusion goes beyond simply being present in spaces. It’s about ensuring that children of all abilities can engage, communicate, and feel a sense of belonging.
In classrooms and early learning settings, this can look like:
Early childhood centers that are equipped to make access to resources easier for parents of children with diverse needs
Flexible routines that support smoother transitions
Sensory-aware spaces that reduce overwhelm
Visual supports and communication tools
Opportunities for movement, regulation, and breaks
In everyday environments, inclusion might mean:
Quiet or sensory-friendly play areas
Staff who understand and respond to diverse needs
Spaces that encourage exploration without pressure
These thoughtful adjustments can make a meaningful difference in how a child experiences the world around them.
The Role of Sensory-Friendly Spaces
For many children with autism, sensory input plays a big role in how they interact with their surroundings. Environments that consider sensory needs can help children feel more regulated, confident, and ready to engage.
This is why spaces like the sensory gym at We Rock the Spectrum are so impactful. They are designed specifically with sensory needs in mind. These environments allow children to move, explore, and regulate in ways that feel natural and supportive.
At Carelinks ABA, we’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with both We Rock the Spectrum Cedar Rapids and We Rock the Spectrum Fenton, spaces that are intentionally built to support children of all abilities.
Creating Community Through Collaboration
Inclusion becomes even more powerful when communities come together.
This April, we’re proud to partner with WRTS Fenton, IA, to support families through meaningful events for parents and children:
April 25th – Community Block Party A space for families to connect, explore resources, and engage in a welcoming, inclusive environment.
April 29th – Parent Information Session Focused on sharing knowledge, guidance, and support for families
Participating in these events is not just about awareness but also about building meaningful connections and making resources more accessible to families.
Inclusive Spaces Are Growing Across Communities
As advocacy and awareness continue to grow, more spaces are being designed with inclusion in mind, not just in therapy or school settings, but in everyday life.
Across Iowa and surrounding regions, families are seeing more opportunities to access inclusive environments, such as those with our collaborative partners:
We Rock the Spectrum - A sensory gym that caters to children of all needs and provides social skills groups and activities for children across the spectrum.
J & C Play Indoor Playground - A welcoming indoor play space designed for children of varying needs.
JouJou - A thoughtfully designed play café encouraging imaginative and inclusive play
Other businesses/ organizations:
Des Moines Children's Museum - Offering interactive exhibits with consideration for diverse learning styles
Similar efforts are expanding into communities across Missouri and New Mexico, where more organizations and local spaces are recognizing the importance of sensory-friendly and inclusive design.
This shift reflects something bigger: a growing commitment to meeting children where they are.
Why Inclusive Environments Matter
When children have access to inclusive spaces, they can:
Participate more fully in daily activities
Build social connections with peers
Develop confidence and independence
Feel accepted for who they are
For families, these environments provide something just as important: peace of mind, knowing their child can engage safely and comfortably.

Creating inclusive environments is an ongoing journey that we actively participate in. One that involves families, educators, therapists, and community spaces working together.
